6. You are an attorney faced with the following factual situations. Using LEXIS, search for any cases and/or statutes that are relevant. For each factual situation, tell how many cases you found, and give the full cites to the 5 most relevant cases and/or statutes. Also, give the search terms that you used. Assume you are in the state of California.
a. Your client, the city of Turlock, wishes to set up checkpoints to check vehicles for license, registration, and insurance. The city is wondering if this would be constitutional.
b. Your client, Carmen, is a prisoner in a state penitentiary. Along with several other inmates, she wishes to practice her religion, which is Satanism. The prison has forbidden her to do so. Have her constitutional rights been violated?
c. Your client, Cleo, is 15 years old, and is being tried as a juvenile for aggravated assault. She wishes to have a jury trial because, she argues, this could be used against her when she is an adult as a "strike" under the three strikes law. Is she entitled to a jury trial in juvenile court?
d. Your client, Connie, has been accused of burning a cross on her own property. She is a well-known white supremacist. Can she be convicted for this?
e. Your client, Carl, was pulled over for driving 50 in a 65 zone. When the officer asked to search Carl’s car, Carl said okay, because he thought he had to. The officer found illegal narcotics. Carl believes that he was pulled over as a result of racial profiling. If so, have his rights been violated?
f. Your client, Charlie, is a newspaper reporter. Using a confidential informant, he wrote an article on a plot to kill the President. The FBI has ordered him to turn over his notes and disclose the identity of his informant. Can he be forced to do so, or would if violate his rights?
