Hate crimes
are criminal actions intended to harm or intimidate people because of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, gender, disability or minority group status. Hate crimes are also referred to as bias crimes. Examples include assault, and battery, vandalism, or threats that involve bias indicators such as bigoted name-calling or graffiti. A hate crime is a civil right violation under California law and, in some cases, federal law. Hate crimes aren’t just crimes against one individual but also to certain groups as a whole, hate crime victims encompass communities as well.Researchers, law enforcement officials, and other authorities think that people tend to hate because they are angry and emotionally troubled. Most members of hate groups tend to be white under their 30’s. They usually come from dysfunctional families who tend to have violent behaviors.
"THE RISE"
Even though statistics are incomplete due to lack of reporting, they’re enough data to confirm that "hate crimes are at rise and are a serious issue that needs to be taken seriously by all. Are we all the victims?
Hate crimes are on the rise than ever in the 90’s. In 1991, the FBI studied over 4,500 case of hate crimes. Of these crimes 2,700 were committed because of peoples race and color, 900 were based on victims religion, 450 were based on ethnicity, and another were on sexual orientation.
The latest report which covers 1993, the FBI said that of 7,587 bias motivated criminal incidents reported by law enforcement agencies, 62% were motivated by racial bias: 17% by religious bias; 11% by sexual orientation bias; and 10% by ethnicity/national origin bias.
Of the 9, 372 reported victims in 1993, 67 percent were targets of crimes against persons. 6 out of every 10 were victimized because of their race, blacks making up a 38% of victims. Of the incidents motivated by religious bias, 88% were Anti Semitic. Intimidation alone accounted for 34%.
According to the Klan watch a unit that monitors hate crimes estimates that statistics are an actual 5% more than what’s being accounted for.
The FBI, is making an effort to obtain more precise statistics, but depends largely on local law enforcement agencies, many of which do not supply information, and in some case the agencies and prosecutors don’t classify hate crimes at all.
"The Ruling"
The Federal Hate Crimes Statistic Act of 1990, together with the Supreme Court’s 1993 rulings that hate crimes laws are constitutional, have encouraged greater emphasis and recognition by law enforcement’s throughout the nation of this sort of crime, which hurts and affects all, not only you and me but our families, communities and friends as well.
